To go beyond conventional ideas about independent living, National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) draws from long, successful history, starting in 1890. NLCS is a faith-based organization that serves people of all backgrounds and beliefs, following its founding mission: To provide for aged persons whose circumstances may require a comfortable residence with board, clothing, employment, medical attention and such other comforts as Christian brotherhood may dictate.

NLCS is a not-for-profit organization, an important distinction for prospective residents: instead of operating to generate dividends for shareholders, NLCS invests all revenues after expenses back into its communities, for better services, amenities and capital improvements.

NLCS is affiliated with the Metropolitan Washington, DC, Virginia and Delaware-Maryland Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). NLCS’ ministry began with the creation of the National Lutheran Home for the Aged in Washington D.C., welcoming its first residents in 1895. In 1980, NLCS opened a new retirement community in Rockville, Maryland, The Village at Rockville, which has flourished ever since. In 2008, NLCS launched its plans for The Village at Orchard Ridge in Winchester, Va., designed to set a new standard for continuing care retirement communities.

Today, we have broken ground, The Village at Orchard Ridge is rising, and so are expectations for a whole new approach to independence and personal choice.
